Trail Experience
The Bald Mountain Trail begins gently enough, winding through a beautiful forest of northern hardwoods. Don’t let the easy beginning fool you, though—the trail becomes progressively more challenging as you climb toward the summit.
As you gain elevation, you’ll encounter plenty of the terrain that makes a mountain hike exciting for kids: roots, rocks, ledges, and increasingly steep sections.
The steepest portions require a little more attention, but new wooden stairs have been added to help hikers navigate some of these sections. These improvements make the climb more approachable while still preserving the feeling that you’ve truly climbed a mountain.
Closer to the summit, the forest changes and the trail reaches exposed granite ledges before arriving at the top of Bald Mountain.
And then comes the best part.
The summit itself is wooded enough that you’ll want to continue up the observation tower for the views Bald Mountain is known for. From the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping views across the Rangeley Lakes region, including Rangeley, Cupsuptic, and Mooselookmeguntic Lakes. On a clear day, you can also see surrounding mountains including Saddleback and Elephant Mountain, with views stretching toward Mount Washington in New Hampshire.
There’s also a picnic table at the summit, making this a great place to pull out your snacks, rest tired legs, and enjoy reaching your destination before beginning the hike back down.
Along the way, you’ll find:
- A gradual beginning through mature forest
- A steady climb that becomes increasingly challenging
- Roots, rocks, and granite ledges
- New stairs helping hikers navigate some of the steepest sections
- A clear summit destination that keeps kids motivated
- An observation tower with incredible panoramic views
- A picnic table for a summit snack or lunch
This is the kind of hike that gives kids a real sense of accomplishment without requiring a long day on the trail.

Tips for Families
Ages:
Best for school-age kids or younger children who already have experience hiking hills, mountains, and uneven terrain. The relatively short mileage helps, but the elevation gain makes this significantly more challenging than a typical family nature walk.
Pacing:
Don’t judge this hike by mileage alone. With roughly 900 feet of climbing, you’ll want to leave plenty of time for breaks—especially on the way up.
Footwear:
Sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes are recommended. The upper portion includes rocks and exposed granite that can become slippery when wet.
Stairs:
New wooden stairs on some of the steepest sections make portions of the climb easier to navigate, particularly for kids with shorter legs.
Pack:
Bring water and plenty of snacks. The summit is a natural stopping point, and the picnic table makes it easy to turn reaching the top into a snack or lunch break.
Timing:
Bald Mountain is a popular Rangeley-area hike and can become busy, particularly on summer and fall weekends. An earlier start or weekday visit can mean fewer people on the trail.
Weather:
Save this one for a reasonably dry day if possible. Wet granite and ledges can make the upper sections more difficult, particularly on the descent.
Fire Tower:
The best views require climbing the observation tower at the summit. Keep this in mind if anyone in your family is uncomfortable with heights.
Why Families Love It
Bald Mountain packs nearly everything families want from a mountain hike into a relatively short adventure.
There’s a real climb. There’s changing terrain.
There are sections that challenge kids to figure out where to put their feet and how to make their way up.
And most importantly, there’s a very clear destination waiting at the top.
The observation tower makes reaching the summit especially exciting for kids. Instead of simply arriving at a wooded peak, they get one final climb before stepping out to expansive views over the lakes and mountains surrounding Rangeley.
For families transitioning from shorter woodland trails into mountain hiking, Bald Mountain can be a great progression. The 2.5-mile distance is manageable, while the elevation gain introduces kids to the sustained climbing they’ll encounter on bigger mountains.
It’s challenging enough to feel like an accomplishment—but short enough to fit into a morning or afternoon of exploring Rangeley.

Plan Your Next Family Adventure
Bald Mountain is an especially good addition to a family trip to the Rangeley Lakes region. At only about 2.5 miles round trip, you can climb a mountain in the morning and still have plenty of time left for swimming, exploring downtown Rangeley, visiting another trail, or finding somewhere for lunch.
If your kids have mastered flatter trails and are beginning to ask for bigger adventures, this is exactly the kind of hike that can help build their confidence.
The climb will make them work for it.
The fire tower gives them something exciting to aim for.
And the view from the top makes it very clear why the effort was worthwhile.
