Why Families Love Outlet Beach

If your idea of a perfect Maine summer day includes swimming, waterslides, paddle boats, a sandy beach, and ice cream, Outlet Beach on Sabbathday Lake is a destination worth knowing about.

This privately owned swimming beach in New Gloucester has been a traditional summer swimming spot since the early 1900s. Today, families can still come here for a classic day at the lake, with plenty of extras that make it especially fun for kids.

The sandy beach leads into the clear waters of Sabbathday Lake, while multiple docks give swimmers places to jump, slide, and play. There are two floating swim docks, including one with a waterslide, plus a stationary dock with two smaller slides that are especially fun for younger children.

When everyone needs a break from the water, find a shady spot for a picnic or stop for homemade ice cream.

Swimming

Outlet Beach offers several ways for kids of different ages and swimming abilities to enjoy Sabbathday Lake.

Two floating swim docks give confident swimmers a destination farther from shore, and one includes a waterslide directly into the lake.

Closer to shore, the stationary dock has two smaller slides that are a fun option for younger children who may not be ready to venture out to the floating docks.

Life jackets and tubes are also available to rent if you don’t bring your own.

As with any natural swimming area, parents and caregivers should closely supervise children around the water, docks, and slides.

That makes it easy to break up a long afternoon of swimming with an ice cream cone—or end your beach day with one before heading home.

Final Notes

Outlet Beach feels like the kind of Maine summer destination families have been returning to for generations.

Instead of simply offering a stretch of sand and a place to swim, there are enough little extras to make an entire day of it. Kids can swim out to the floating docks, fly down the waterslide, try the smaller slides closer to shore, float in the lake, or head out on Sabbathday Lake in a rented pedal boat.

Add in shady picnic areas and homemade ice cream from Bresca & The Honeybee, and you have all the ingredients for an easy summer outing.

The beach is generally open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting, with swimming from 9 AM–5 PM and ice cream from 11 AM–5 PM.

Parking is limited, so arriving earlier is a good idea on those hot Maine summer days when everyone has the same plan.

Whether you’re coming for a couple of hours of swimming or packing a picnic and settling in for the day, Outlet Beach is a fun place to experience a classic summer day on Sabbathday Lake.
