Why Families Love Quill Hill

If you’re visiting the Rangeley area and want incredible mountain views without needing to hike to earn them, Quill Hill is one of the easiest adventures to add to your trip.

Located between Rangeley and Stratton in Dallas Plantation, Quill Hill offers 360-degree unobstructed views from its 2,848-foot summit. The best part for families? You can drive all the way to the top.

A well-maintained, four-mile dirt road winds its way up the mountain to the summit, where there is plenty of room to park, get out, and explore. The drive took us about 12 minutes from Oddy’s Road to the top, making this an easy outing for families with kids of any age.

We visited at sunset on a clear summer evening, and it was a beautiful way to end the day. With mountains stretching in every direction and the sky changing as the sun went down, Quill Hill is one of those simple Rangeley-area stops that feels much bigger than the effort required to get there.

Drive to the Summit

What to Expect

Once you turn onto Oddy’s Road from Route 16, you’ll follow a four-mile dirt road to the summit.

The road is maintained and designed to accommodate a variety of vehicles, including cars and RVs. Plan on approximately 12 minutes of driving from the beginning of Oddy’s Road to the summit.

Drive slowly and follow posted speed limits. Quill Hill is privately owned and maintained, and taking care of the road helps keep this special destination accessible to the public.

At the top, you’ll find:

  • 360-degree mountain views
  • A large parking area
  • Picnic tables
  • A wood-fired grill with wood provided
  • Upper and lower viewing areas
  • A ¾-mile walking trail connecting the viewpoints
  • Plenty of space to stop and enjoy the scenery

The Views

The view is the reason to make the trip.

From the 2,848-foot summit, you’ll have 360-degree unobstructed views across western Maine’s mountains and surrounding landscape.

Because you can drive directly to the summit, Quill Hill makes a mountain-top experience accessible to families who might not otherwise be able to complete a long or difficult hike. Babies, toddlers, grandparents, and anyone with limited hiking ability can experience the same sweeping scenery.

Kids can get out, stretch their legs, explore the viewpoints, and watch the landscape change as the sun begins to set.

Sunset at Quill Hill

If the weather cooperates, consider timing your visit for sunset.

We visited on a clear summer evening, arriving with enough time to enjoy the views before watching the sun go down. It made for a relaxed end to our day in the Rangeley area without requiring another big activity or hike.

One thing I would absolutely recommend: bring a sweatshirt.

Even on a warm summer day, it can feel noticeably cooler and breezier at the summit, especially once the sun begins to disappear. Having an extra layer made it much more comfortable to stay and enjoy the view.

If you plan to stay after sunset, Quill Hill is also known as a spot for stargazing thanks to its elevated location and expansive sky.

Walk & Explore

You don’t have to simply drive up, look around, and head back down.

A ¾-mile trail connects the upper and lower viewpoints, giving families an easy way to add a little walking to their visit.

You can also bring dinner or snacks and use one of the picnic tables. There is even a wood-fired grill at the summit with wood provided, making it possible to turn the drive into a picnic dinner with a pretty spectacular backdrop.

Rest & Refuel

Shade: Limited. The summit is exposed, so plan for sun during the day.
Seating: Picnic tables are available at the summit.
Food: Bring your own picnic, snacks, or dinner. A wood-fired grill is available, with wood provided.
Temperature: Expect the summit to feel cooler than lower elevations, particularly around sunset. Bring an extra layer even if it has been a warm summer day.

Getting There & Getting Around

Location: Quill Hill is located on Oddy’s Road in Dallas Plantation, between Rangeley and
Stratton.
Road: Approximately four miles of maintained dirt road from Oddy’s Road to the summit.
Drive Time: About 12 minutes from the beginning of Oddy’s Road to the summit.
Parking: Plenty of parking is available at the summit, with room for vehicles including RVs.
Accessibility: One of Quill Hill’s biggest advantages is that visitors can drive directly to the summit viewing area, making the mountain views accessible without a hike.
Cost: There is no traditional admission fee, but Quill Hill is privately owned and maintained. Donations are greatly appreciated and help cover maintenance costs. Donation boxes are located along the road.

Parent Pointers

Visibility: The summit is open and exposed, with plenty of room for families to spread out and enjoy the scenery.
Safety Notes: Keep younger children close near overlooks and viewing areas. Drive slowly on the dirt road and respect all posted speed limits.
Best Time to Visit: Clear days will give you the best chance of seeing the full 360-degree views. Sunset is especially beautiful, but bring warm layers if you plan to stay into the evening.

Final Notes

Quill Hill is proof that you don’t always need a long hike to experience some of Maine’s best mountain scenery.
