Why Families Love Windham Primary School Playgrounds

Windham Primary School offers one of the larger school playground destinations in the Sebago Lake region, with three separate playground structures spread across the campus. This guide focuses on the two playgrounds located behind the school building, where families will find plenty of opportunities to climb, swing, slide, and play.

The lower playground is the larger of the two, while the upper playground offers a slightly smaller play space with its own unique features. Because the playgrounds sit at different elevations and are separated by open space, many families find it easiest to choose one playground at a time rather than trying to supervise children using both simultaneously.

Please remember that school playgrounds are not open to the public during the school day. Portions of the campus may also be used for summer school, recreation programs, before- and after-school care, and school vacation programming. The best times to visit are weekends or evenings, generally after 6:00 p.m.

Play & Explore

Lower Playground

The larger of the two playgrounds provides lots of opportunities for active climbing and imaginative play.

Features include:

  • Large multi-level play structure
  • Multiple slides
  • Stairs
  • Ladders
  • Rock climbing walls
  • Fire poles
  • Several styles of monkey bars
  • Four standard belt swings
  • Sandbox
  • Surfboard rockers for balancing
  • Open grassy field for running and games

Upper Playground

Located just uphill from the lower playground, this slightly smaller play area offers many of the same climbing opportunities with a few unique additions.

Features include:

  • Multi-level play structure
  • Multiple slides
  • Stairs
  • Ladders
  • Rock climbing walls
  • Fire poles
  • Several styles of monkey bars
  • Six standard belt swings
  • Web climbing structure
  • Merry-go-round

Between the Two

A basketball hoop sits between the two playgrounds, giving older children another option for active play.

Rest & Refuel

Shade: Limited to moderate. Some shade is available depending on the time of day, but much of the playground is in full sun.
Restrooms: Portable toilets are typically available on the school campus closer to the athletic fields.
Seating: A few benches and a picnic table are available around the playgrounds structures.
Water Access: No public drinking fountain is available. Bring plenty of water, especially during warm weather.

Getting There & Getting Around

Parking: Visitors can park in the school parking lot when school and recreation programs are not in session.
Accessibility: Mulch playground surfaces with grassy areas surrounding the equipment.
Cell Service/Wi-Fi: Strong cell service throughout the area.

Parent Pointers

Visibility: Fair. It is difficult to see children moving between the upper and lower playgrounds because of the layout and elevation changes. Families with multiple children may find it easier to keep everyone playing on one playground at a time.
Safety Notes: The playgrounds are partially fenced, but children can still access surrounding grassy areas and walkways. Adult supervision is recommended, especially with younger children.
Nearby Food & Coffee: Numerous restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, and ice cream options are located just a few minutes away along Route 202.
Best Time to Visit: Evenings after 6:00 p.m. and weekends are generally the best times to visit. Avoid school hours, and be mindful that portions of the campus may be in use for summer school, recreation programs, or before- and after-school activities.

Final Notes

The combination of two modern playgrounds, multiple climbing challenges, swings, open grassy space, and extra features like the web climber, merry-go-round, basketball hoop, and sandbox provides enough variety to keep children entertained for a long visit. Just remember to plan your trip outside of school and recreation hours so everyone can safely enjoy this excellent community playground.
