Outdoor STEM Learning in Southern Maine: EcoSTEM Adventures

If you’ve been looking for something that goes beyond a typical class, where kids are moving, thinking, exploring, and actually understanding what they’re learning—this is it.

EcoSTEM Adventures is redefining what science and math can look like for kids in Southern Maine.

Instead of worksheets and indoor classrooms, learning happens outside—on trails, in forests, along streams, and inside real ecosystems.

And for many families, it becomes something they build their week around.

What EcoSTEM Adventures Is All About

At its core, EcoSTEM is built on a simple idea:

Kids learn best when they can experience what they’re being taught.

No photo description available.

Every program blends:

  • Science, math, and systems thinking
  • Hands-on exploration and real-world problem solving
  • Movement, curiosity, and observation

There’s no busywork. No passive learning.

Instead, kids are:

  • Collecting real data
  • Measuring and analyzing what they see
  • Asking questions and testing ideas
  • Building confidence in how they think

It’s thoughtful, engaging, and designed to actually stick.

Programs Offered (Year-Round Opportunities)

One of the things that sets EcoSTEM apart is the range of ways families can participate depending on their schedule and needs.

Three children crouched down in a forested area, examining objects in a white container. One child wears a light blue shirt and pink shorts, another has a pink shirt and navy shorts, and the third child has brown hair and sunglasses. A white bucket is nearby on the ground, surrounded by fallen leaves and greenery.

School Break & Summer STEM Programs

Monday–Thursday | 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Small group, project-based outdoor learning

These multi-day programs are designed for kids who want more time to explore, collaborate, and fully engage with STEM concepts in a real-world setting.

Across both school breaks and summer sessions, kids spend extended time outdoors:

  • Investigating ecosystems
  • Collecting and analyzing data
  • Working through challenges with peers
  • Building real science and math skills through hands-on projects

With consistent, small group learning and longer blocks of time, this format allows kids to go deeper than a typical class or camp.

It’s a strong alternative to traditional programs—especially for kids who learn best through movement, curiosity, and time spent outside.

Outdoor STEM Microschool (Launching Fall 2026)

  • Ages 4–13 (grouped by age)
  • 1–2 days per week options
  • Full school-year program

This is a bigger commitment—and for many families, a game changer.

The microschool offers:

  • Consistent learning rhythm
  • Deep, long-term STEM projects
  • Community with other families
  • Instruction from experienced educators

It’s designed especially for homeschool families, but the approach appeals to any parent looking for something more meaningful than a traditional classroom model.

A Look Ahead: The Eco-STEM Field Lab

EcoSTEM Adventures is continuing to expand what outdoor learning can look like.

A newly purchased bus is being transformed into the Eco-STEM Field Lab—a mobile classroom designed to bring learning even further into the field.

Once complete, the space will include:

  • Seating for student transportation from a consistent pickup location
  • A dedicated lab table for hands-on projects
  • A small onboard bathroom for longer outings
  • A thoughtfully designed interior to support real-world learning on the go

This next step opens the door for more immersive experiences, giving kids the ability to travel, explore, and learn in a way that goes beyond a single location.

It’s one more way EcoSTEM is building something that feels both intentional and forward-thinking for families in this area.

Who This Is For

While many programs are geared toward elementary-aged kids, EcoSTEM works for a wide range of families.

This is a great fit if you have a child who:

  • Loves being outside
  • Asks questions and wants real answers
  • Learns better by doing (not sitting still)
  • Needs movement to stay engaged
  • Enjoys nature, science, or building things

It’s also a strong option for:

  • Homeschool families
  • Kids who don’t thrive in traditional classrooms
  • Families looking to add meaningful enrichment to their week

What Kids Actually Experience

This isn’t just “outdoor play.”

Each session is intentionally designed so kids are:

  • Measuring temperature, growth, and environmental changes
  • Studying real ecosystems (not just reading about them)
  • Applying math in real-world ways
  • Testing ideas and building solutions
  • Collaborating with other kids

The result?

Learning that feels natural—but is actually deeply structured and skill-building.

Location & Setting

Programs take place across Gorham, Windham, and Scarborough, using a variety of outdoor locations like:

  • Forest trails
  • Wetlands and marshes
  • Rivers and streams
  • Coastal environments

Each location is chosen intentionally to match what kids are learning, so the experience always feels relevant and real.

A Different Way to Learn

Some of the best learning doesn’t happen at a desk.

It happens:

  • Standing in a stream
  • Watching how something changes over time
  • Asking a question—and figuring out the answer

That’s what EcoSTEM is built on.

And for many families, it becomes one of the most valuable parts of their week.

Whether your child loves being outside, asks endless questions, or just needs something more engaging than another indoor activity, EcoSTEM offers a way to step in and get started right away.

From free weekly sessions to multi-day programs and seasonal offerings, there are options that fit easily into real family schedules.

Be sure to check their website for the most up-to-date schedule, program details, and current registration options.
