Why Families Love Fort Hill Park

Sometimes the best outdoor spaces are the simplest ones.

Fort Hill Park in Gorham is a quiet, open green space where families can slow down, spread out a picnic blanket, take a short walk, or spend some time observing the natural world around them.

Located on Fort Hill Road just outside Gorham Village, the park offers approximately six acres of open space with benches and picnic tables scattered throughout. Rather than playground equipment or sports fields, the focus here is simply having room to explore, play, and enjoy being outside.

Bring a kite on a breezy day, pack a picnic lunch, search the plants for monarch caterpillars, or look toward the sky to see how many different birds you can spot.

Fort Hill Park also has an interesting connection to Gorham’s history. The Town dedicated the park in 1976, with the Gorham Lions Club playing an important role in raising funds to help purchase the property.

Fort Hill Park isn’t a destination packed with traditional recreation amenities, and that’s part of its appeal. The wide-open space gives kids room to create their own fun.

Bring a ball, bubbles, binoculars, nature journals, or simply let the kids wander and see what catches their attention.

Nature Observation

Fort Hill Park is a particularly nice destination for families who enjoy slowing down and noticing the smaller things outdoors.

During the warmer months, check plants carefully for monarch caterpillars and other insects. Bring binoculars and look overhead for birds passing through the open sky, or challenge kids to see how many different plants, insects, and birds they can find during your visit.

The open setting also makes this a fun place to bring a kite when the wind is right.

A Little Gorham History

There’s more history beneath this quiet park than you might expect.

The high ground here was once the location of an early fort built in 1744, and Gorham settlers reportedly lived within the fort for several years. The Town later dedicated Fort Hill Park in 1976.

For families with older kids, this can add another layer to a visit: you’re not only enjoying an open green space, but spending time at a location connected to Gorham’s early history.
