Winter Fun You Can Do Anytime (Perfect for a No-School Day)
Not every MLK Day plan needs a set start time. If you’re looking for something flexible — or want to build your day around naps, weather, or sibling energy levels — these classic winter activities are always solid options.
- Skiing
A few hours at a local mountain, a beginner lesson, or even just time on the bunny hill can turn a day off into a special winter memory.
👉 Read about the local family friendly ski resorts nearby. - Snowshoeing
One of the most kid-friendly winter activities there is. Short loops feel manageable, and many families borrow snowshoes from libraries or local organizations.
👉Learn where you can borrow snowshoes & read a guide for beginners. - Exploring a trail
Familiar trails feel brand new in winter. Packed snow, icy edges, and animal tracks turn a simple walk into an adventure without needing to go far.

Outdoor rinks and open skate times are great for mixed ages. Some kids skate laps, others shuffle, slide, or take plenty of warm-up breaks.
👉 Find all of the local ice rinks & where to check for updates on their conditions. - Sledding
A good hill, a few runs, and rosy cheeks afterward — sometimes this is all kids really want. Easy, affordable, and always a hit.

These winter classics pair perfectly with the scheduled events happening on Monday, January 19th, and they’re often the simplest way to make a no-school day feel full without feeling busy. I’ll continue updating the list as more MLK Day events are announced.
More to Come
This list will continue to grow as libraries, rec departments, and local businesses release their MLK Day schedules. I’ll be updating this post as new events are announced.
