What to Know Before You Go
The Sebago Lake Land Reserve is a managed 1,700-acre trail network bordering Sebago Lake in Standish, created to protect drinking water lands while offering great outdoor recreation year-round — hiking, snowshoeing, skiing, and yes… sledding!
To access the sledding hill:
- Fill out a free land access permit at any of the Portland Water District trail kiosks when you arrive.
- Parking: You can park at any kiosk, but the pull-off on Route 237 (just south of where the Sebago to the Sea Trail crosswalk is) is closest to the sledding hill.
The Approach
From the Route 237 parking area, it’s a short ~0.2-mile walk on the Sebago to Sea Trail — a gently packed, multi-use trail that’s groomed by snowmobiles in the winter and easy for families to follow.
After about 0.2 miles, take the signed Horsetail Trail into the woods, where you’ll find the sledding hill nestled in a clearing — perfect for an afternoon of zooming down with a sled or tube.
The Sledding Hill
This hill is steep enough to be exciting but still manageable for kids, especially ages 5 and up who have a little confidence on snow. It’s one of the better natural sledding spots in the Sebago Lake region, wide enough for safe runs and with gentle walk-backs for repeated rides.
- Best sleds: Inflatable tubes work especially well here, but traditional plastic sleds or saucers are great too.
- Safety: Keep an eye on other families and be sure to walk up the side of the run so riders have clear paths down.
