Looking for a short walk with towering trees and changing scenery? Nelson Preserve in Gorham offers a 1.1-mile loop through a mix of woodland, meadow, and wetland habitats.
Large red oaks are a highlight of the preserve, with trees spreading above the meadows and rising over groves of hemlock. The variety gives families plenty to notice along a relatively short route.
Parking is limited to space for approximately 2–3 cars along the road, so this is a destination to keep in mind for a small family outing.

Trail Experience
Nelson Preserve protects approximately 36 acres and is owned and managed by the Presumpscot Regional Land Trust. The property was donated by the late Jane Nelson.
The trailhead is on the north side of Flaggy Meadow Road. Look for the roadside kiosk, with parking just beyond the barn. From there, the loop leads through several different habitats, including forest, wetlands, and areas of thick shrubs.
Along the way, families can look for:
- Large red oak trees
- Hemlock groves
- Meadow habitat
- Wetland areas
- Shrubby thickets
- Seasonal berries
The land trust describes the walk as easy to moderate, while AllTrails rates it easy. AllTrails lists approximately 98 feet of elevation gain, making this a walk with some gentle changes in elevation. Wet sections may occur, particularly on the western side of the loop.
Let children set a comfortable pace and turn the walk into a simple nature hunt. Can they find an oak leaf, hear a bird, or notice how the plants change between the woods and more open areas?

Tips for Families
Ages: Consider your child’s comfort walking a little over a mile on a natural trail. Leave time for breaks and exploring along the way.
Parking: With room for only 2–3 cars along the road, carpool if meeting another family. Keep driveways and the travel lane clear, and supervise children while unloading.
Footwear: Choose shoes with good traction. Waterproof boots may be helpful after rain or during wetter seasons.
Nature Exploration: Bring a magnifying glass or let children photograph interesting leaves and plants. Encourage them to observe wildlife without disturbing it.
Berries: Enjoy looking for seasonal berries, but teach children to check with an adult before eating anything growing along the trail.
Dogs: Bring a leash and waste bags, and pack out pet waste.
Winter Visits: The land trust identifies the preserve as a place for snowshoeing. Plan around snow and ice conditions.
Pack: Bring water, snacks, bug spray, and a downloaded trail map.
Why Families Love It
A short loop gives children a clear destination: follow the trail around and return to where you started.
At Nelson Preserve, the changing habitats also offer an easy way to keep young hikers interested. Make a game of noticing where the shade deepens, where the plants grow thicker, and where different leaves cover the ground.
For families looking for a manageable walk in Gorham, this loop offers a chance to slow down and enjoy the details of a local preserve.
