Trail Experience

Mill Brook Preserve South begins with a quiet trailhead tucked near an open field where horses can often be seen grazing beside the parking area — something that immediately makes the outing feel exciting for younger kids before the walk even begins.

Wooden steps leading up a hillside through a forest, surrounded by autumn leaves and trees.

From there, the trail follows a mostly gentle lollipop-style loop through the woods, making it easy to navigate without needing to worry much about trail decisions or steep climbs.

One of the biggest highlights of this preserve is the number of bridges scattered throughout the trail system. Kids will cross multiple wooden bridges as the trail winds alongside Mill Brook, creating plenty of natural stopping points to look at the water below.

A short spur trail leads directly down to the brook itself, where families can slow down and watch the moving water or look for fish activity during migration season.

If you visit from late May through mid June, you may be able to observe alewives migrating through Mill Brook — an annual natural event that draws both wildlife enthusiasts and local families.

The Presumpscot Regional Land Trust occasionally hosts guided walks with fish migration experts during this time, which can make for a really memorable outing with older kids interested in nature and wildlife.

Along the trail, families can expect:

  • Gentle wooded paths
  • Multiple wooden bridges
  • Brookside views and water access
  • A large staircase built into the hillside
  • Quiet forest scenery with relatively easy terrain

And while most of the walk stays fairly manageable, there is one feature kids will almost certainly remember: the enormous staircase built into the trail.

A serene forest scene featuring a shallow stream with smooth stones and reflections, surrounded by tall trees showcasing autumn foliage. Two children are exploring the stream on the right side of the image.

No matter which direction you hike the loop, you’ll both descend and climb the long staircase section — turning an otherwise easy walk into a little adventure without making the trail overly difficult.
