Ice skating is one of those classic winter activities that never gets old — and The Rink at Thompson’s Point is one of the best spots in southern Maine to bundle up and glide on the ice with family and friends. Situated right on the waterfront with scenic views of the Fore River, this seasonal outdoor rink blends traditional winter fun with a lively community atmosphere that kids (and adults) will love.

What to Expect

This rink offers public skating sessions throughout the winter season on a professionally maintained ice surface, complete with a chilling system and Zamboni to keep the ice smooth. Sessions are ticketed in timed blocks, so you can plan a morning or afternoon outing that works with your schedule. The schedule is released on Sunday for the following week.

Skate rentals are available right on site, with sizes ranging from toddler skating shoes up to adult sizes. The rink also provides skating aids to help little ones find their balance and confidence on the ice — a big help for first-timers or young skaters!

Amenities & Comfort

While the rink is outdoors, there are plenty of features to make your visit comfortable:

  • A heated tent with cubbies for gear and warm-up space
  • Outdoor picnic tables and a separate viewing area for families
  • Food and beverages — think hot cocoa, pretzels, and more winter favorites
  • Adult beverage options for those looking to relax after skating

There are also restrooms close to the heated area, making it easy to manage little ones during your visit.

Tickets & Costs

Public skating sessions and rentals are available throughout the rink’s season. Tickets are $12 for ages 5 and up, with kids 4 and under skating free — and if you have a WinterKids Passport, children 17 and under can skate for free with a paying adult up to two times! Skate rentals are an additional $6 if you do not bring your own and must be purchased at the rink.

Parking is available at Thompson’s Point, with a small hourly fee.

Tips for Families

Before you go:

  • Dress in layers — winter winds off the river can feel brisk!
  • Check the rink’s social media for current ice conditions and session availability — schedules can change with the weather.

The Rink at Thompson’s Point manages to feel both classic and lively — from the traditional joy of skating outdoors to the modern extras like fun music, skating aids, and cozy gathering spots. It’s a great way to get outside, enjoy winter weather, and make new memories with your crew. Whether it’s a first skate of the season or a family tradition, this rink has something for all ages

Disclosure:
As a WinterKids Ambassador, I was gifted a WinterKids Passport. For this visit, I used two complimentary kids’ skating sessions through the passport and paid admission for two adults. All thoughts and experiences shared here reflect our family’s honest visit and what families can expect when planning a trip to the rink.
