If you’re looking for a short, scenic hike that’s gentle enough for kids but interesting enough for anyone who enjoys getting outside, the Grape Expectations Trail in Raymond Community Forest is a wonderful choice. It’s part of a network of trails that offer varied terrain, wetland features, and forested paths.
The trail begins at the parking lot off Conesca Road. From the kiosk, you follow the Spiller Homestead Loop trail, and shortly afterward you branch off onto the Grape Expectations loop (via yellow-blazed trail markers). Along the way you’ll cross boardwalks over wet ground, pass through forest, and in spring see vernal pools and wildflowers. The trail is labeled for both hikers and mountain bikers in its lower section, with more rugged or restricted paths on other parts of the network.
Grape Expectations is about 1.1 miles in length, with easy elevation ‒ friendly for families, casual walks, and those who want a quick nature fix. To complete the loop, you’ll need to connect with a short portion of the Spiller Homestead Loop, bringing the total distance to about 1.3 miles. It’s accessible in most seasons; snow or wet weather might make some parts muddy or slick. Dogs are allowed (with leash rules at certain times), and the forest is open use for walking, biking, and nature observation.
