As the air turns crisp and Maine’s trees burst into brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, fall becomes one of the most magical times of year. Families head out for apple picking, pumpkin patches, and cozy hikes—but it’s also the perfect season to capture annual family photos.

Annual photos aren’t just about getting a picture for the holiday card. They create a tradition, preserve memories, and tell the unfolding story of your family year after year. Amanda of Amanda Chillemi Photography, a local photographer and mom, is collaborating with us today to share why fall family photos are so special and what makes them worth prioritizing.

A Tangible Record of Your Family

Amanda shared that the true value of annual photos goes far beyond capturing a single moment—they provide a lasting record of a family’s growth and change, helping parents preserve the story of their lives together. Family sessions are not just about documenting the kids, but about making sure parents are included in the memories too.

“As both a photographer and a mom, I think the biggest benefit of having annual photos taken is that they create a tangible record of your family. They go beyond just capturing a moment; they document growth, change, and the story of your family. For me, children grow in the blink of an eye, and as a mom, I’m usually the one behind the camera rather than in photos with my own kids. Reaching out to a photographer to take my family’s photos so that I can be in them and tell our story is very important to me.”

Capturing the “In Between” Moments

Big milestones—graduations, new homes, new babies—deserve to be remembered. But Amanda notes that annual family photos are about much more than that.

“Annual photos are a powerful tool for telling a family’s story over time because they create a visual timeline that goes beyond just the big moments. While milestones are important, annual photos also capture the subtle, in-between moments that truly define a family’s journey. They ensure that every chapter of the story is remembered and cherished.”

Why Fall Is the Perfect Season in Maine

There’s a reason fall is the most popular time of year for family photo sessions in Maine.

“Without a doubt, the foliage in Maine is stunning. The trees explode with reds, oranges, and yellows, making each picture timeless,” Amanda explained. “The crisp, cool air after summer makes outdoor photo sessions more enjoyable, and the timing of the light is perfect. The sun sets earlier, which makes golden hour more manageable for families with younger kids and earlier bedtimes.”

Making Sessions Relaxed and Fun

If you’ve ever worried about your kids sitting still or smiling on command, Amanda reassures families that professional sessions aren’t about perfection—they’re about connection.

“I want families to feel like this isn’t a job or a task—it’s a time to have fun and be silly with their kids,” Amanda said. “We might play a game of tag, tickle, hug, or just let the kids be themselves. The goal is to capture genuine interactions and photos that tell their family’s story.”

Her advice to parents? Stay relaxed and positive. Kids pick up on energy quickly, and when parents let go of pressure, the best memories unfold.

Choosing the Right Location and Outfits

Where you take your photos matters almost as much as who’s in them. Amanda helps families find spots that feel natural and comfortable.

“I always ask my families what their vision is—do they have a favorite activity like hiking or swimming? Do they already have a location in mind? With kids, it’s important to choose somewhere with easy access and space to run around without busy roads or crowds,” she explained.

When it comes to outfits, Amanda recommends choosing a seasonal color palette and coordinating pieces rather than matching exactly. She emphasizes comfort above all—when families feel like themselves, their photos naturally reflect genuine joy and connection. She says “The goal is to look cohesive and harmonious, but not like you’re wearing uniforms.”

Pro Tips for a Great Fall Photo Session

  • Choose a location that feels like “you.” Whether it’s a favorite trail, orchard, or lakeside spot, the best photos happen where families feel comfortable.
  • Coordinate, don’t match. Build a seasonal color palette and let everyone’s personality shine through.
  • Plan for golden hour. The soft light right after sunrise or before sunset creates a warm, magical glow—perfect for family portraits.
  • Keep it fun. Laugh, play, and let kids be kids. The most memorable photos come from genuine moments, not stiff poses.

Start Your Family’s Tradition This Fall

Fall in Maine is fleeting—by November the vibrant leaves have fallen and the colors that make these sessions so magical are gone. If you’ve been thinking about scheduling family photos, September and October are the time to do it. Booking now ensures your session happens while the foliage is at its peak, the air is crisp, and the light is golden.

Whether it’s your first time booking professional photos or a yearly tradition, Amanda Chillemi Photography can help you capture your family’s story in a way that feels authentic, fun, and timeless.
