What to Expect During Your Visit

MSSPA is a shelter to 35-40 horses at a time, many of whom have been rescued from situations of abuse or neglect. These majestic animals receive daily care and love from a dedicated team of staff and volunteers. The goal for each horse is rehabilitation and, when possible, finding them a loving new home. Some of the horses even receive professional training to prepare them for adoption.

Visitors will enjoy:

  • Seeing the horses in their paddocks or barns.
  • Learning about the rehabilitation process and the organization’s mission.
  • Taking a leisurely walk around the picturesque farm.

Be sure to wear sturdy footwear, as the farm terrain can vary, and dress appropriately for the season. Hats and sunscreen are recommended in the summer, while warm layers are a must during Maine’s colder months.

Support a Meaningful Mission

MSSPA is a 501(c)3 charitable organization and licensed animal shelter, funded entirely by donations, grants, and fundraising activities. Most of the horses come to the facility through Maine law enforcement officials after experiencing neglect or abuse. The MSSPA’s work is not only vital for these horses but also offers an opportunity for visitors to support a meaningful cause. MSSPA Advancement Director Peg Keyser shares “some future animal advocates are ‘born’ here when they learn about the work, how the horses get here, how we care for them, and how we work (hard!) to find ideal homes to adopt them out.” Your visit and any donations contribute to the care and rehabilitation of these incredible animals.
