Parent-Approved: Splash Pad Packing List for a Fun Summer Day

There’s nothing quite like a trip to the splash pad to turn an ordinary summer day into an adventure. It’s free (or cheap), perfect for a wide range of ages, and gives kids a chance to cool off, move their bodies, and make memories.

But let’s be real—if you show up unprepared, a splash pad visit can quickly go from fun to frazzled.

That’s why I’ve pulled together this ultimate list of parent-approved splash pad essentials—inspired by veteran moms across the internet and my own trial-and-error packing over the years. I’ve included affiliate links to our favorite picks so you can shop easily (and help support the Lake Region Kids Calendar in the process).

The Ultimate Splash Pad Packing List

1. Water Shoes

Splash pads are slippery and sometimes hot! Water shoes help protect feet from scrapes and burns—and they dry quickly.

2. Comfortable Swimsuits

Look for suits with coverage, good stretch, and UPF protection. Rash guards are great for long sunny days.

3. Hats & Sunglasses

Wide-brimmed hats and kid-friendly shades help protect little faces from sunburn.

4. Sunscreen + Face Stick

Opt for water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen and a gentle stick for face and ears. Reapply often!

5. Quick-Dry Towels

Towels don’t need to be bulky! Pack thin towels that dry fast and fit easily in your bag.

6. Swim Diapers (if needed)

Most splash pads require non-disposable swim diapers for little ones still in diapers.
Reusable swim diapers that actually fit

7. Wet Bag

Perfect for separating soggy swimsuits and towels from dry clothes.
Leakproof wet bags

8. Change of Clothes

Bring a full set (shirt, shorts, underwear, socks) for each child. Don’t forget your own dry shirt, just in case.

9. Snacks & Water Bottles

Splashing is hungry work! Bring easy grab-and-go snacks and refillable water bottles to stay hydrated.
Insulated kids’ bottles that keep drinks cold

10. Cooler Bag or Lunch Tote

If you’re staying awhile, a soft-sided cooler for fruit, sandwiches, or juice boxes is clutch.

Bonus Essentials for a Truly Smooth Day

Extra Water & Electrolyte Packs

Kids can get dehydrated quickly in the sun. A backup water bottle or drink powder can be a game-saver.

Small Splash Toys

Bring a few cups, squirters, or water toys—nothing too bulky or banned.

Foldable Chairs or Picnic Blanket

Not all splash pads have seating. Pack a blanket or travel chairs so adults have a place to relax.

Spacious Tote Bag

Make packing easier with a large tote or mesh bag with compartments.

Wipes & Hand Sanitizer

Whether it’s post-snack cleanup or muddy hands, wipes and sanitizer are always useful.

First Aid Kit

Band-aids, sting relief, and a cold pack are smart to have in your bag—just in case.

Things to Keep in the Car

Don’t forget to stash these extras for the ride home:

  • Extra towels
  • Trash bag for wet items
  • More dry clothes
  • Car seat protectors or old beach towels

Whether you’re visiting your neighborhood splash pad or making a day of it at a new one, this list will help you feel cool, calm, and totally prepared.
