The sun is hanging around a little longer each evening, the buds are finally blooming, and the kids are practically bouncing out of their shoes — it must be spring! That also means playground season is officially here in the Sebago Lake region. But before you load up the car, a little prep can go a long way toward making your outings smoother, safer, and a lot more fun. Whether you’re a seasoned playground pro or just dipping your toes into the world of swings and slides, these tried-and-true hacks will make your visits easier all season long.
1. Keep an “Adventure Bag” Packed and Ready to Go
The best playground trips are the ones where you can head out the door in five minutes flat. Keep a tote or backpack packed with the essentials:
- Sunscreen and bug spray
- Wipes and hand sanitizer
- A small first aid kit (think bandaids and antiseptic wipes)
- Extra clothes or swimwear if there’s a splash pad
- A hat and water bottle for each kid
Restock it once a week and hang it by the door — no more last-minute scrambling!

2. Use a Mesh Bag for Sandy or Wet Toys
Beach toys, sand buckets, or even muddy water shoes? Toss them all into a mesh laundry bag. Not only does it keep everything contained, but the holes let sand, dirt, and water drain out on the way home. Bonus: it’s easy to rinse the whole thing out in one go.
3. Stash a Picnic Blanket with a Waterproof Backing
A good blanket makes every playground visit more relaxing — think snack breaks, diaper changes, or a shady spot to sit with a baby sibling. Look for one with a waterproof side so morning dew, wet grass, or damp mulch don’t soak through. Roll it up and keep it in the trunk so it’s always there when you need it.
4. Pack a Few Small Toys to Rotate
Instead of hauling the entire toy bin with you, keep a few inexpensive, new-to-them items tucked away just for the playground. Think:
- A bubble wand
- A plastic magnifying glass
- Chalk for sidewalk doodles
- Little cars or trucks for racing or digging
Pull out just one at a time to keep things novel and exciting. It keeps kids engaged longer and gives you a backup plan if the swings are crowded or the slide is wet.
5. Let Them Choose “One Last Thing” Instead of Saying ‘5 More Minutes’
When it’s time to wrap up your playground visit, try swapping the classic “Five more minutes!” for something more concrete — especially since young kids often don’t grasp time the way we do. Instead, give them a choice:
“Do you want your one last thing to be a trip down the slide or one more push on the swing?”
This gentle approach gives them a sense of control while clearly signaling that playtime is winding down. It also avoids the confusion and frustration that can come with countdowns they don’t fully understand. Giving them that small choice can make a big difference in how calmly (and quickly!) everyone makes it back to the car.
A little prep = a lot more peace of mind.
Playgrounds are one of the simplest ways to enjoy the sunshine, burn energy, and connect with other local families. These small hacks can make your visits a little more organized and a lot more fun.
