Trail Experience

The Pinehaven Trail starts just before the Maine Lake Science Center off Willett Road in Bridgton. From the parking area, follow the short path past the gate and into the forest — we typically follow the loop counterclockwise from here. The trail is marked with green pine tree blazes, making it easy to follow through the woods.

You’ll soon reach the first of several play-style features that make this trail so unique. There are seven themed challenge stations scattered throughout the loop:

  • Bridgetown – A series of swinging, rocking, rolling, and tilting beams that invite kids to test their balance and coordination.
  • Narrow Gauge – Tiptoe from wood to wood as if you’re walking along narrow railroad tracks through the forest.
  • Mills and Dams – Balance across suspended logs while traversing over a few rocks and weaving around big trees in between.
  • Birds on a Wire – Stretch out your arms like our feathered friends as you balance carefully across a single wire line.
  • Wildwood Walk – Zigzag your way across a series of woodland beams and stumps, perfect for playful movement.
  • Enchanted Forest – Step up and down from log to log, exploring the forest floor from different heights.
  • Paul Bunyan’s Playground – Swings, rolling logs, ladders, and a treehouse-style platform make this a favorite spot to finish — or to linger and play for a while.

Each station encourages climbing, balancing, or creative movement in a natural setting. Between the Mills and Dams and Birds on a Wire challenges, be sure to closely follow the trail markers — a side path toward the boardwalk trail can be easy to mistake for the main route.

If you’re not up for the full loop, the Paul Bunyan’s Playground area alone is enough to keep kids happily busy for quite a while!

Along the way, you’ll also find interpretive signs that teach about the trees, plants, and animals that thrive in this forest. These educational stops help kids learn about the environment while they play and explore.

For those looking to extend their adventure, the Pinehaven Trail connects to Pondicherry Park in three ways:

  • By following the Willett Brook Trail from the parking lot, or
  • By climbing over the stone wall near the “Birds on a Wire” challenge, or
  • By following the Science Center Board Walk trail to the Willett Brook Trail.

If your kids enjoy learning while they walk, they’ll also love these Local Story Walk Trails that combine literacy and outdoor fun!
